LASIK & Bladless LASIK Surgery

Laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis, or LASIK for short, was introduced in the early 1990s. This flap surgery procedure has become the most widely performed laser treatment method for correcting refractive errors. By reshaping the cornea, LASIK allows light to focus correctly on the retina, providing clear and sharp vision.

With LASIK, a thin flap, a kind of hinged piece of corneal tissue, is created in the outer layer of the cornea. It is folded back to expose the underlying corneal tissue, which is then reshaped with an excimer laser to correct the refractive error. With traditional LASIK, a controlled blade (microkeratome) is used to create the flap. With Femto-LASIK, an advanced and bladeless form of the procedure, the flap is created with a fast and highly precise femtosecond laser

"At our advanced eye care centre in Delhi, we offer both traditional LASIK and the latest in bladeless femto LASIK technology. Our commitment to utilizing state-of-the-art equipment ensures safer, more precise surgeries, even for patients with thin corneas or complex prescriptions."

Both LASIK and Femto-LASIK offer numerous benefits that improve quality of life:

  • Quick visual recovery: Most patients experience significant visual improvement within 24 hours.Vision generally stabilizes within the first week.
  • Painless Procedure: LASIK is virtually painless, with only mild pressure felt during the procedure.
  • Long-Term Results and Extensive Experience: LASIK has been the treatment standard for over 20 years. Many surgeons are very experienced in performing the procedure. Many clinics around the world offer LASIK.Results are nearly permanent in most casest, though natural changes to the eye may occur with age.
  • Freedom from Glasses/Contacts: Enjoy clear vision without the hassle of corrective eyewear.

Specific Advantages of Femto LASIK:

  • Higher Safety and Precision: The safety margins have been increased drastically with advent with Femto-LASIK which makes entire procedure is bladeless and very precise. The flap creation is very predictable and thin flaps can be created repeatably and precisely, markedly reducing chances of flap related complications.
  • More Suitable for Thin Corneas: With femtosecond laser even patients with thin corneas can undergo LASIK safely. Zeiss VisuMax Laser is distinctly advantageous in thinner corneas where flap as thin as 80um can be consistently created.
  • Faster Healing and Recovery: The smoother, bladeless flap creation promotes faster recovery and less discomfort.

LASIK is a quick and painless procedure. During this 15-20 minute procedure the patient is awake and anaesthetic eye drops are applied to the eye to ensure that thesurgery is painless. An eyelid holder is used to prevent the eye blinking during surgery. Here's a step-by-step breakdown of what to expect:

Step 1: Flap creation

PThe eye is anesthetized with special drops. With traditional LASIK, a controlled blade (microkeratome) is used to create the flap. With Femto-LASIK, an advanced and bladeless form of the procedure, the flap is created with a fast and highly precise femtosecond laser. During the flap creation phase one may have a sensation of pressure and a grayness of vision (More with Microkeratome LASIK)

...

Step 2: Flap is folded back

The prepared flap is folded back like the page of a book, exposing the inner corneal tissue to be treated.

...

Step 3: Corneal sculpting

The excimer laser removes the corneal tissue point by point within a few seconds, thereby correcting the visual defect. One may hear rapid clicking sounds or smell burning odours during excimer laser delivery.

...

Step 4: Flap is repositioned

Afterward, the flap is returned to its original position, protecting the eye much like a natural bandage. It takes about a minute for the flap to stick down.

...

After the procedure, one will be prescribed eye drops to help your eye heal along with a set of some precautions (avoiding swimming, strenuous work, rubbing etc.). Also, vision may be a little blurry for a day or so. Most patients are able to return to work in 48 hours, and have continuing improvement in their vision over next few days.

Bladeless femto LASIK is an advanced version of LASIK surgery that uses a femtosecond laser to create the corneal flap, as opposed to the mechanical microkeratome blade used in traditional LASIK. This offers several key advantages:

Advantages of Femto LASIK over Conventional LASIK

  • Precise Flap Creation: In femto LASIK, the femtosecond laser creates a highly precise corneal flap, resulting in more consistent thickness and shape, reducing the risk of complications.
  • Thinner Flap for Thin Corneas: With femto LASIK, particularly when using the Zeiss VisuMax femtosecond laser, we can create thinner flaps—as thin as 80 microns—compared to other machines, which create flaps no thinner than 90 microns. This is especially beneficial for patients with thin corneas, allowing more tissue to be preserved.
  • Increased Corneal Tissue Strength: Thinner flaps mean more of the corneal tissue is left untouched, maintaining greater structural strength and stability after surgery. This reduces the risk of post-operative complications like ectasia (weakening of the cornea).
  • Better Healing and Comfort: The precise, bladeless nature of femto LASIK results in smoother flap edges and a faster healing process, with fewer chances of flap-related complications.

VisuMax Laser Technology: Setting a New Standard with 80-Micron Flap

Our centre is equipped with the Zeiss VisuMaxfemto laser, which offers unparalleled precision in flap creation. Unlike other femto lasers, which create flaps no thinner than 90 microns, the VisuMax can create flaps as thin as 80 microns..

  • A thinner flap preserves more of the corneal tissue, allowing for safer surgeries, even in those with higher prescriptions or thin corneas.
  • Preserving more tissue also maintains better corneal biomechanics, which translates to stronger, healthier corneas post-surgery.

We offer a range of LASIK procedures tailored to each patient’s specific needs and corneal anatomy. Here are the options:

Standard LASIK

Standard LASIK reshapes the cornea based on the patient’s prescription, offering excellent results for those with mild to moderate refractive errors. This is the most commonly performed type of LASIK and provides significant vision improvement for many patients

Aspheric (Wavefront-Optimized) LASIK

Aspheric LASIK goes a step beyond standard LASIK by taking into account the natural shape of the eye. This wavefront-optimized approach minimizes higher-order aberrations (imperfections) that can affect night vision, halos, and glare.

Key Benefits:

  • Reduces night vision disturbances like glare and halos.
  • Offers sharper, more detailed vision, particularly in low-light conditions.
  • Better preserves the natural curvature of the cornea

Customized LASIK

Customized LASIK uses detailed 3D maps of the eye (generated by a corneal/ eye mapping device) to create a highly personalized treatment plan. This ensures that even minor irregularities in the vision are corrected, providing superior visual outcomes.

Customisation can be made depending on capturing device:

Wavefront-Guided LASIK uses ocular or corneal aberrometer to map aberrations (abnormalities) is wavefront generated from eye or cornea allowing for a highly individualised treatment. Commercially many companies use their self-devised trade names for customised lasik like Zyoptix, HD Lasik, Custom Q etc.

Key Benefits:

  • Corrects both lower and higher-order aberrations.
  • Delivers more precise results tailored to the patient’s unique eye anatomy.
  • Ideal for patients with more complex prescriptions or higher-order aberrations.

Topo-guided LASIK uses corneal topography to map the unique surface contours of the cornea, allowing for a highly individualized treatment. This method is particularly useful for patients with irregular corneas or corneal scarring.Commercially make companies use their self-devised trade names for topo-guided lasik like ContouraLasik etc.

Key Benefits:

  • Corrects corneal irregularities.
  • Improves overall corneal shape and quality of vision.
  • Particularly useful for patients with previous corneal trauma or surgery.

Specific Advantages of Femto LASIK:

  • Higher Safety and Precision: Laser-created flaps are more precise, leading to fewer complications.
  • More Suitable for Thin Corneas: With the VisuMax laser, even patients with thin corneas can undergo LASIK safely.
  • Faster Healing: The smoother, bladeless flap creation promotes faster recovery and less discomfort.
...

For patients with presbyopia—the age-related loss of near vision—LASIK can also be used to provide relief. We offer two main solutions:

  • Monovision LASIK: One eye is corrected for distance vision and the other for near vision, allowing presbyopic patients to see clearly at all distances.
  • Laser Blended Vision: This approach blends the focal points of both eyes, allowing for improved near and far vision without affecting depth perception.

Both techniques provide a long-lasting solution for patients looking to reduce their dependence on reading glasses or bifocals.

To be eligible for LASIK or femto LASIK, patients must meet certain criteria:

Inclusion Criteria:
  • Over 18 years old with a stable prescription for at least 1 year.
  • Suffering from myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism.
